Winning Designs for Thanksgiving

GRACE Art in the Schools (AIS) recently conducted a Thanksgiving Card Challenge to design a Thanksgiving Card for a Reston based construction company called K3.  Two Terraset students were placed in the prizes.

There were 37 entries from eight AIS schools - Armstrong, Boyd School, Canterbury Woods, Floris, Freedom Hill, Green Hedges, Greenbriar West, and Terraset.  The winning card was designed by Caitlyn Ling from Greenbriar West.  2nd place was Osman Ahmed (5th Grade) from Terraset.  3rd place was Rodrigo Quinonez (2nd Grade) from Terraset.
BoxTops Collection
Its participation that counts!

Are you collecting BoxTops? The important thing is to join in. Whether your child contributes one BoxTop or 100 they still count as a participant in their class contribution.

Classes with the highest participation rates are rewarded, so get those BoxTops in
Reston Girl Scouts Earn Bronze Awards
All have ties to Terraset

Troop 4158 Winners
Five girls from Girl Scouts Troop 4158 recently earned their Bronze award--the highest award that Junior Girl Scouts can achieve.

Jessica Klonaris, Erin Bobby, Gisela Johnson-Harbers and Anna Tignor from Terraset Elementary School and Maryam Gilanshah from Holton-Arms School (and Terraset alum) organized summer food drives at local grocery stores to stock Reston Interfaith's Food Pantry.

While working at the food pantry last year, they learned that food banks typically have low inventory during the summer months.  Reston Interfaith's emergency food pantry provides people in need with fresh and nonperishable food.  The girls collected about $1,000 worth of groceries, including diapers and infant formula which were in very short supply.

Congratulations to all of the girls!
Tigers on the Town

Don't miss this great opportunity to help the school (25% of your purchase comes back to Terraset) and take a night off cooking!

Tiger Tales is Back!
Exciting Opportunity to Get Published

Exciting news!  Tiger Tales returns!!  Last year the school published its very first literary magazine, Tiger Tales, with contributions from Terraset students.  This year, the process will start earlier.  Submissions will be accepted from November 9th  -  February 26th by email (bettina.forman@fcps.edu) or for younger students, by placing submissions (with help from teachers and parents) in Bettina Forman's mailbox in the front office.

2008 Tiger Tales CoverPoems, songs, very short stories (150 words or less) or essays, written at home or during writing workshop in school, will be reviewed for possible publication by fifth and sixth grade student editors.  Faculty advisers will be Heather Dix and Bettina Forman.

Electronic submissions are required from students in grades 3-6 to make sure that the editing process is smooth.  It is expected that all submissions will have gone through the entire writing process including editing and revision.  Parents can check younger student's work, and editors will re-type those submissions.  However, if a parent, volunteer or teacher types a younger students' work, please save it to the server or email to bettina.forman@fcps.edu  Art will be included after the written submissions have been laid out.  Like last year, a publishing party is planned for June during which the community can meet the authors and get first editions.

Fifth and sixth graders can apply to be student editors.  They must agree to meet before school at 8:15 am on specific days to be determined.  In order to be considered, future editors must have strong writing skills, a B or higher in Reading and Writing, an "S" or better in citizenship grades, submission of student edited text, and permission from their parents or guardians and their classroom teacher.  Applications are due by November 23rd. Applications will be placed in the mailboxes of the fifth and sixth grade teachers.
