The Earth Day Carnival is over
for this year and it seems to have been a great success. We estimate
that about 200 families came to the carnival this year... what a
fantastic turnout! No doubt, the fact that the rain held off helped!
The day started with the Kook
Katz 5k and Neil Stobie returned to successfully defend his title as
first finisher in the 5k. He was closely followed by Trevor Paradis in
2nd place, and Liz Falcone followed, a few minutes later, in 3rd place
and first woman over the line. While the 5k was not a huge event...
Terraset parents and teachers were well represented!
Fun Run Begins
 |
The 1.6k family fun run
attracted a larger field of runners with Sofia Milosevic (5th grade)
coming in first and Juana Hernandez (Kindergarten) in 2nd place,
followed closely by her mother, Sandra Vasquez, in 3rd place.
The Silent Auction offered
over $11,000 value in goods and services. As a
result, about 50 families walked away with some great bargains
or treasured prizes after placing the winning bids on about 110 items
that were up for sale. Its expected that the auction will bring in more
than the targeted $4,000 so thanks to all who contributed to this great
event!
Even though the forecasted
rain resulted in some last minute changes to the rides, the kids still
had a great time and the big slide proved to be a big crowd pleaser.
About 15 teachers were sighted
in the crowd, many of whom helped with running games during the day.
There's not doubt this really excites the kids, particularly the
younger ones, and makes the day very special.
The combination of great games
and fantastic prizes (one lucky attendee walked home with a pair of
racing wheels for his road bike after a turn around the Tree-mendous
Treasure Tree!) ensured a great time was had by all. In addition, the
displays of sculptures made from re-used materials, 6th grade
persuasive essays on why we should take care of our environment, and
agents from the "Protect the Planet" club who proudly displayed their
badges throughout the school demonstrated that the Earth Day message
was not lost on the crowd!
Then the icing on the cake
came with the Carnival Basket draws. The Nassar family won the "Family
Fun" basket, the Krull family won the "Eight and Over Arts and
Crafts" basket, Mrs Daly won the "Six and under Arts and Crafts"
basket, and the Lego Basket was won by the Potfield
family.
Thanks to over 90 volunteers
and something like 400 volunteer hours it was a great day! Let's do it
again sometime!
