| Dear Friend of Terraset,
The end of the school year is so close, but we still have news for you!
The Terraset Tigers went on the Town
last Thursday, and with some help from our friends at Armstrong ES, we
had a great time and raised over $180. That will send a few kids on a
field trip next year! Thanks to Heather Thomas for organizing the
evening with Shain Noor Ali at Baskin Robbins.
For those of you who have been
working hard to collect Box Tops all year, we have exceeded our goal!
And the Box Tops you submitted last week will help us start the next
school year well! By the way, Mrs. Sybert's 1st grade had the highest
participation rate again, followed by Mrs. Byrnes' 2nd grade. What
great tiger spirit these kids have!
Don't forget Field Day next week. Remind your kids to dress appropriately and send an extra water bottle in with them.
If you did not get your school
supplies order in last week, we have managed to extend the School
Supplies Sale! See below for details.

Pumpkin Patch Prepared!
The kindergartners test it out
You may remember that Whole Foods
Markets donated a vegetable garden start-up kit to the school earlier
this month! Well, the Grounds and Natural Connections committee got
together last week to set it up, and the kindergartners tested it out
on Friday. They had a great time watering the plants and joining in
other garden related activities.

So, Terraset students are now the
proud producers of vegetables. Well, we hope the sugar pumpkins fully
develop for fall harvest.
Next year's kindergarten students
will get to help harvest the crop and we hope the first grade students
have an opportunity to help too. In addition, Mrs. Wehle is planning to
work some art projects around the garden!

Junior Girl Scouts Help SPCA
The Junior Girl Scouts from Troop
4158 love animals. They spent their year working on animal
related projects with the ultimate goal of finding a way that they
could help animals in need. The girls collected unwanted items
from friends and neighbors and set up a booth at the Reston Community
Yard Sale in May. They made posters to tell shoppers that all
profits would be donated to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty
to Animals, and sales were good. The girls raised $45.
This Saturday, the troop attended an
SPCA dog adoption event in Fairfax, where they presented a check to the
organization. The SPCA volunteers were extremely grateful, and
they presented the troop with a certificate of appreciation.

Inviting Rising Kindergartners
Join Our Play Group!
Over the past couple of years, Terraset PTA has helped to establish a Kindergarten Playgroup for our rising kindergartners.
Typically, parents register their email address with us, we call for a
volunteer to co-ordinate the group, then the kids meet to play together
on the Terraset Playground once a week for about six weeks prior to
school starting. This provides an opportunity for both children and
parents to get to know each other before the school year starts. One
year the group met on Wednesday afternoons at 3pm. Last year the agreed
time was Monday at 6pm.... The day and time will be up to the group.
If you would like your email address to be added to the playgroup list, please let us know at:

FCPS and Google Announce Eduction Initiative
Terraset to participate...
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
and Google, Inc., announced the details of their partnership, which
will create an education initiative in advanced Google Earth
applications, on Monday, June 14, at 3 p.m. in the lecture hall at
South Lakes High School.
Google has pledged to train FCPS educators to use Google Earth
products; FCPS educators will then produce at least 24 curriculum
packets-to be aligned with state and federal educational
standards-which can be replicated in FCPS and distributed worldwide by
Google. Working on the curriculum packets will be teachers;
specialists in special education, English for speakers of other
languages, and advanced academic programs; librarians; school-based
technology specialists; and central office staff members. Most
training will take place over the summer, and teachers will receive
stipends as part of the $35,000 donation from Google.
Google, whose federal offices are located in Reston, helped select the
FCPS pyramid to participate in the initial training. Schools
participating in the initial phase of the partnership are South Lakes
High, Hughes Middle, Dogwood Elementary, Forest Edge Elementary, Hunter
Woods Elementary, Lake Anne Elementary, Sunrise Valley Elementary, and
Terraset Elementary Schools.
