Dear Friend of Terraset,
Last month we were still talking about
snow... this month we have been coping with 90 degrees! As is the
nature of things, we are constantly dealing with change. But in the
middle of that change there are always constants... get to school on
time, do your homework, play fair! What we want to ensure is that our
kids have a constant, quality school environment. That requires
financial support.
It seems we are "always" asking for help and donations. But these efforts result in good things!
- Terraset ES is one of very
few schools in the country running Math Superstars. Thank the PTA
for helping to build the school's reputation for good practice in
math education.
- Terraset's Assemblies Program supplements
and supports the school's curriculum. Thank the PTA for coordinating
and funding this program.
- Terraset's After School Program is the
envy of many schools. Thank the PTA for coordinating and funding
scholarships in this program
- Terraset's teachers receive thousands of dollars in mini-grants each year. Thank the PTA for securing these financial resources.
So please, as you read this month's
TouchPoint and learn of our need for help, act today to do your part...
a part in securing that constant, quality school environment for your
child.
If there is information that you would like to see included in this publication, please send us your thoughts.

| Teacher's Tale: Mr. Jonathan Andert |
|
from Devon Boatwright
Jonathan Andert is a new teacher in the
Terraset hallways. So new, in fact, that your first glimpse of
him may have been as he zombified himself with some of the other
teachers in Terraset's recent talent show. But when he's not
playing zombie, he's our newest music teacher, currently standing in
for Mrs. Goldman while she is on leave.
Mr. Jonathan Andert, Terraset Music Teacher
 |
Jonathan has music in his blood; his grandfather was a band director
and trumpet player. The trumpet was passed down to his father, and
then on to him. His older brother also teaches music. So it
just made sense that Mr. Andert graduated from Western Michigan
University and went on to teach band and music. Before coming to
Terraset in November 2009, he taught band and music at a private school
in MD. He says, "I feel I have found my calling through general
music. Everyday is new and exciting. The students bring new
ideas into the classroom and challenge me to be a better
teacher. I work my hardest to show all my students that everyone
has music inside of them. Music is truly a universal language,
connecting all persons on the planet."
Jonathan is passionate about showing the children he teaches just how
much joy and freedom music can bring to them while also instilling in
them the educational benefits music has to offer. Children who are
involved in music score better in testing and are reinforced in basic
math and language development. World history and geography are
touched upon when students learn where and why a song was
written. Performing together teaches children how to work
cooperatively, while practicing individually teaches perseverance.
There are many joys to teaching music but Mr. Andert definitely loves
listening to his class perform something they found challenging at
first. He loves seeing the pride on their faces and hopes they
will carry these accomplishments with them throughout their
lives. His biggest challenge does not involve music, but instead,
time management. It's always a challenge to connect with each
student while only seeing them twice a week. He's also had to get
used to switching gears from teaching Kindergartners to sixth graders
within a couple of minutes.
When he's not teaching music, Jonathan is living music. He has
played trumpet since he was in fourth grade- performing in jazz bands,
marching bands, etc while in school. He has also performed in a
number of bands as a singer and trumpeter, including a rock band, folk
band and an experimental jazz band. In his spare time he writes
lyrics and music and, though he has not done anything with them, he
enjoys writing them a lot. Jonathan has no favorite genre of
music; it all depends on his mood. Among some of his favorites are
Shostakovich, The Bad Plus and Talking Heads.
Jonathan Andert is most definitely passionate about and experienced in
his music. With his winning smile, his joy is sure to be
infectious to the children of Terraset and his music class will leave a
lasting impression on them. Welcome to Terraset, Mr. Andert!

| HELP! Really Can't Do This Alone! |
|
We are in desperate need of
volunteers for the Carnival. Please don't assume someone is doing
this... they are not! If each family in the school could just give us
one hour on either Saturday, April 24th to setup, or Sunday, April 25th
to make things happen... the carnival will be a success!
On Saturday we will be decorating and setting up games.
On Sunday, carnival duties will include:
ticket sales, running games, selling food, managing the prize table,
and helping with the silent auction.
We
have many great, fun games for your kids to play at the carnival, but
they each need people to run them. So, please help our Terraset kids
have a fantastic day on Sunday. Just click a link below, give us your telephone number, your child's name and teacher, and send the message, we need to hear from you.
I can help at Carnival setup, Saturday 4/24/10: 10-12 12-2 2-4

| Terraset Art Show at Wholefoods Market |
April
is Earth Month and Terraset ES has been invited to exhibit some of its
students' artwork at Wholefoods Market in Reston. Mrs. Wehle has
selected a number of pieces and delivered them to the store in Plaza
America for showing. So this month, when you go shopping, allow a
little extra time to take in the exhibition. We are confident you will
be very proud of our students! |
| GRACE Art Corner: MC Escher |
|
From Alison Stobie
It's GRACE Art time again and this month
the kids will look at the work of MC Escher, a Dutch graphic
artist. The students will be using a template to make a repeating
pattern.
MC Escher, Self Portrait, 1929
 |
Maurits Cornelius (M.C.) Escher was born
in the Netherlands in 1898. After high school Escher studied
graphic arts. After art school, Escher travelled to Italy and
Spain and was influenced by the patterned mosaics he saw in the
Alahambra Palace in Granada, Spain. The geometric patterns of the
mosaics with optical illusions and transformations were very appealing
to Escher.
Escher discovered the spaces between shapes (negative space) were as
important as the shapes themselves (positive space). In Escher's
work, the spaces become the shapes and vice versa. For example,
one group of creatures could turn into another group. Look at "Day
and Night" and "Birds and Fish" for negative space.
In some of Escher's pictures, the images create optical
illusions. Every time you look you can see a change in figures or
movement. Escher wanted to explore "the idea of many different
worlds existing in the same place at the same time." Escher was
trying to see all the different layers or stages of life
simultaneously. One of his common themes was
metamorphosis. We usually think of this as a caterpillar changing
into a butterfly or a tadpole into a frog. In his picture reptiles
or lizards are changing from flesh to paper and back.
Drawing Hands by MC Escher, 1948
 |
Paper drawings are generally two-dimensional but Escher makes his
pictures three-dimensional by using a number of different
techniques. One is his use of shading to mimic the effect of light
hitting a three-dimensional object and creating shadow. Light and
shadow are used to make objects appear as if they are in front or
behind other objects. "Drawing Hands" is a good example of the use
of this technique. Another way to create three-dimensional space
is to use linear perspective. Lines are drawn so that they meet at
a single vanishing point. This technique is often used to make
buildings and rooms three-dimensional. "Ascending and descending"
and "Waterfall" are examples of the use of this technique.
Escher's images are characterized by their complex constructions of
multidimensional space and their use of geometric tessellated
patterns. Mathematicians and scientists have studies Escher's work
but some artists think art should be more serious. What do you think?

| Signing up with eScrip Pays Off! |
We are excited to share with you that Safeway contributed $3,143.45
to Terraset Elementary School in 2009. This is a very generous
donation! Made possible because some of you registered with eScrip and
then shopped at Safeway
Safeway has continued to support us, even in these tough economic times.
This money goes directly to the school and
Terraset puts it to great use. It can be applied to any educational
purpose including classroom supplies through upgrades to equipment.
So, if you shop at Safeway thank you! But
let's not forget to thank Safeway too! Why don't you send a
thank you note to the store manager -- let them know we appreciate what
they do for us!

| Assemblies Program In Full Swing |
|
From Suzanne Veter
On March 23rd
Members of The Maple Academy of Irish Dance
 |
The Maple Academy of Irish Dance performed at Terraset as part of the
PTA Assemblies Program. Our students enjoyed the dancing, which was
followed by a question and answer period, for nearly an hour.
Twelve girls, ranging in age from nine to fourteen demonstrated various
jigs and reels to traditional Irish music. We learned that their
dance shoes can be hard, like tap shoes or soft, similar to ballet
shoes. The soft ones are called Ghillies.
Traditionally all the dancers wore velvet dresses with heavily
embroidered Celtic designs and had their hair done in tight
curls. Our modern dancers have an embroided wool costume for class
and a fancy, and sometimes costly, one for competition. These costumes
can be quite sparkly and cost thousands of dollars
as they are each specially designed for the dancer. All the
dancers we saw were wearing curly wigs to save time.
Our students enjoyed the music and the energy of the dancers and were
clapping enthusiastically along with the
music. They were amazed to learn that one of the
dancers started when she was four and had been dancing for ten years.
On Wednesday, the kids enjoyed in another assembly "Glee..Peter
Polluter and His Planet" -- a very appropriate show for Earth Month
which explored environmental issues and the benefits of recycling,
reusing and renewing!
We have one more assembly scheduled for the year "The Medieval Knight"
making five assemblies that the PTA has sponsored this year. In
2009-2010 we were able to budget $4,000 for our assembly program,
primarily made possible due to the success of last year's carnival.
Let's hope we have this success in 2010 and continue this great program
next year. |

| Toys For Tots Literacy Program |
Do you remember that earlier this year
your children came home with a book given to them by the school? That
gift was made possible by our local UPS Store and its owner, Hal Berens.
The South Lakes location of The UPS Store
raised thousands of dollars last year and used the money to purchase
books for selected elementary schools in the Reston area. Terraset was
one of those schools and we received over 400 books that were given to
our kids. " My goal is to give every child the opportunity to
learn/improve their ability to read" says Mr. Berens.
The UPS store is planning to do it again
and has already raised just over $3,900 during the November-December
2009 fundraising season. The UPS Store corporate matched their
efforts. This fall, that money will be used to purchase books for
our schools again.
But that is not all they do! During this month (April 2010), they'll be
accepting Toys for Tots Literacy donations. To support this
'mini-drive' you can make donations that benefit children in the
greater Reston area as well as the students of your school. You
can make these tax deductible contributions at the South Lakes Village
location of The UPS Store at 11160 C1 South Lakes Dr.
Drop into the store, say "thank you" and make your contribution. Credit card payments are accepted!
